As many of the green camera ghost shows float into the ether and aliens quickly become ancient history, the rise of psychic mediums has become unprecedented. But are these mediums really tapping into another realm and peering into your inner most thoughts, or is it a keen ability to read the most subtle of clues creating an illusion of psychic divination? Much like many of the other paranormal fascinations of today, the act of Mentalism can trace its roots to the renascence of the occult that dominated Victorian era culture. While Mentalism loosely falls under the category of “magic”, and supposition will place it in the same field as that of mediums, one may argue the fact that it is neither. On this episode of The Malliard Report, we sit down with world renowned mentalist and magician Morgan Strebler to discuss mentalism, magic, the debunking of mediums, his beef with Criss Angel, “the magician’s code”, and his love for The Man of Steel.
While many mentalism acts and feats can trace their lineage to that of oracles and seers of ancient civilizations, much of what is seen today originates from the paranormal parlor tricks that wowed the goers of many Victorian era parties. Mentalism is defined as a performance in which its practitioners (also known as mentalists) appear to be able to demonstrate highly developed mental or intuitive abilities. Their shows vary depending on the style and audience, but can feature many different “feats” such as hypnosis, telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psychokinesis, mediumship, mind control, and rapid mathematics. Occasionally magicians will mix mentalism tricks into their act, however most mentalists have a tendency to refrain from utilizing “standard” magic tricks in theirs. The idea of having traditional magic tricks in a mentalist act may associate mentalism with the theatrical trickery of stage magic which counters the illusion of mentalism being “real”.
